Philadelphia Countryside
The Philadelphia experience extends far beyond Center City and the urban borders. Philadelphia and The Countryside ® is an unparalleled destination that offers more experience than any other region in the U.S. No matter what your interests, you are sure to find the vacation of a lifetime here.
Any season of the year is an ideal time to explore the towns and country experiences of the Brandywine Valley, which stretches across into both Chester County, PA northern and New Castle County, DE. Just 30 minutes southwest of Philadelphia International Airport, gourmet restaurants, art galleries, microbreweries and cozy boutiques line the historic main streets of West Chester and Kennett Square in Chester County's Brandywine Valley. Nearby, the 1,050 acres at Longwood Gardens display scores of outdoor gardens and greenhouses. The one-of-a-kind QVC Studio Tour offers a glimpse into the fascinating world of the popular shopping network. The Simon Pearce Studio provides a memorable experience with its glass blowing studios, retail shop and gourmet restaurant.
Outside of town, rolling hills and picturesque landscapes offer a magnificent backdrop for golfing, outdoor recreation and romantic drives. Delaware County's Brandywine Valley is a diverse region full of world-class shopping, historical sites and outstanding lodging and dining. Museum lovers can follow the legacy of N.C., Andrew and Jamie Wyeth at the Brandywine River Museum. The great American country estate of Winterthur showcases a magnificent collection of American antiques and a 60-acre garden. The Media Theatre and Hedgerow Theater present a wide range of musical and dramatic performances. Brandywine is the perfect location for botanical brilliance, including the magnificent colors of Chanticleer Gardens, Tyler Arboretum and the Newlin Grist Mill, an active 1704 water-powered mill surrounded by hiking, trout fishing, picnicking and nature trails. And George Washington's headquarters and the campsites of his troops take visitors back to the nation's earliest days at Brandywine Battlefield.
Just a half-hour from Center City sits the beautiful and historical landscapes of Montgomery County and Valley Forge National Historical Park, where George Washington and his troops survived their winter American Revolution encampment.
No battles were fought here, but some 2,000 soldiers died-more Americans than were killed at the battles of Brandywine and Germantown combined. Valley Forge is the story of an army's epic struggle to survive against terrible odds, hunger and disease. Visit General Washington's original stone headquarters, log cabins and statues throughout the park.
Nearby, take a tempting tour of a fourth-generation candy company at Asher's Chocolate Factory. In Merion, The Barnes Foundation houses one of the finest collections of early French Modern and Post-Impressionist paintings in the world. (Advance reservations are needed.)
